Responsive transformers brief reflection

During the start of responsive, I was contacted through email by an Ex-student from my college who was giving a talk to the current foundation year. Apparently while he was there, my previous tutors was showing him some portfolios that where left there and he had seen my previous work that I've done back in foundation. We got talking and he told me that he really liked my old work and would love to see more of it. From my old work, he told me that he really liked my pixel work and would love to have a poster or a shirt in that style. After talking a bit more we found out that we had a common interest in transformers and it all sort of came together from there.

With the groundwork set, he asked me if he could pay to get some posters of the characters made for him in a pixel style from a few transformers of his choosing. I explained to him about my responsive module and wanted to see if it was alright to include him in it with this project and he was fine with it. Once more, when i asked him what he wanted he told me that it was up to me, he wanted to see what i came up with but he did say he just wanted the pixel art as it’s the simplistic style that he really likes. I agreed and was really happy with this concept and was looking forward to creating work for this project.

This is the first time that I've been contacted to create work for someone which just made me giddier to start working on this brief.

Straight of the bat, this has been one of my favourite projects that I’ve had the most fun on. It’s been a change in pace for me as this has been the first illustrative project that I’ve done while on the course. Because it’s been something new and the fact it’s been based on something that I’m a big fan of, has made this project into something more than just a brief and into a gateway of broadening my practice.

The whole pixel aesthetic has been something I’ve personally been a fan of for as long as i can remember as I’ve grown up with the likes of the Gameboy and other video games. Being able to create designs within this style really resonates with me and it’s something that really got my creativity running. If I was to have more time I’d like to make more characters and a better background of something like a set from the show. To be honest, I’m going to be continuing this project as a self-initiated project after hand in anyway.

This project has already got people contacting me about possibly getting printed copies of certain characters through the likes of Instagram and BeHance which is the first time it’s happened to me. The Idea of people asking for my work has dug me out of the burnt out ditch I’ve seen my sell in within my second year. I’m happy with how the posters look and im planning on getting a bunch printed for the end of year show possibly and to get some for myself.

I’m happy how this project turned out as it went from a small project that i was set to a big brief for my responsive module due to how much i was invested into it and i would like to do more projects like this in the future
