Kern-Down
To get us started with understanding typography, our tutor devised a game to allow us to familiarise ourselves with Kerning in text // logo-types. The game was called "Kern-Down" and the way it was played was to choose 4 letters, vowels or consonants, and to arrange them into a company name, once done, we would be given sector that our brand would be in and would have to arrange to letters to make a logo for said sector.
Our group had chose to call our company Boat (is it was the only word we could make//think of with our given letters) and began to play the game. While this game was a blast, it really got me thinking about how kerning is used within graphic design and how much it effects it. After playing the game i felt like i had a better understanding of how kerning is used and to fully appreciate the impact it has on the consumer. to further this, after the day was done, a friend of mine sent this link to me (http://type.method.ac), the premix of the site is basically another kerning game but this one compares your answers to 1000's of other designers to see how close you were to getting it right. out of 100 I got 89% which is pretty reasonable since completing the kern-down game. Thanks to both of these, I can confidently say i have a good understanding on how to use kerning.
